PIA airline is one the finest airlines of Pakistan and has been in service for a long time. But the company has a very interesting past which in itself is a one of a kind journey to success.
PIA airline also commonly know as PIA started its operations son after the Independence of Pakistan, in June 1946, when Pakistan was still in the offing, Mr. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Founder of the upcoming nation, instructed Mr. M.A. Ispahani, a leading industrialist, to set up a national airline, on a priority basis. With his singular vision and foresight, Mr. Jinnah realized that with the formation of the two wings of Pakistan, separated by 1100 miles, a swift and efficient mode of transport was imperative.
Over the past PIA airline has evolved into a world-class airline and has some outstanding accomplishments such as being the first airline in the world to operate scheduled helicopter services, first Asian airline to land in Norway, first non-Communist airline to land in China, first airline in Pakistan to operate a flight with an all female crew at command and in the cabin, first airline in the world to operate the Boeing 777-200ER, 777-200LR and 777-300ER together. Moreover it was awarded IATA Operational Safety Registration in 2005. It also showed the biggest volume boost in 2006 by Frankfurt Airport Authority. It also has a line of domestic awards including the “Brands of the Year” Award, “Consumers Choice Award” and “The Best Airlines Award (Cargo)”. PIA also received the shield by Presidency of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia for its outstanding services provided over the period of Hajj and Umrah as well.
PIA Airline is majority owned by the Government of Pakistan (87%) while the remainder (13%) by private shareholders. PIA airline falls under the direction of the Ministry of Defense chaired by its current chairman, Ahmad Mukhtar. The airline is managed by managing director, as well as the Board of Directors. The Board consists of nine independent non-executive members and has four sub-committees.

PIA Airline has one of the best meals as well, on an average PIA Catering can produce 15,000 passenger meals each day. However the management control of the flight kitchens has been given to Singapore Air Terminal Services by end of 2006. PIA airline abiding by the Religious Laws of Islam provides special meals to meet its passengers’ dietary and religious needs. It strictly does not serve alcohol beverages or pork on board.
PIA airline’s share in the international travel market can been judged by its code-sharing with Aerosvit Airlines, China Southern Airlines (SkyTeam), Thai Airways International (Star Alliance) along with Turkish Airlines (Star Alliance).
PIA airline operates scheduled services to 24 domestic destinations and 39 international destinations in 25 countries across Asia, Europe and North America. Its main bases are at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi. PIA has been ranked as a 3-star airline by Skytrax, the world’s official airline and airport reviewer.
Having made the record for the fastest flight between London and Karachi. With representatives of FAI (Federation Aeronautique International) on board to monitor the official timings, PIA airline completed the flight in 6 hours, 43 minutes, 51 seconds, a record which remains unbroken to this day. PIA airline Corporation, commonly known as PIA, the flag carrier airline of Pakistan is definitely going to keep up the same pace and make even greater records to add to its magnificent history.
